Measure what is already in your attic, and get the R-value you still need, the inches to add, how much material to buy, and whether it has to be unfaced.

Step One: Find Out What You Already Have

Almost every guide tells you to subtract your existing R-value from your target, then leaves you to work out what your existing R-value actually is. That is the hard part, and it takes a ruler rather than a document.

Push a ruler or a stiff tape straight down through the insulation until it hits the drywall or the joist top, and read the depth. Do it in three or four spots across the attic and use the lowest reading, because insulation settles unevenly and the thin spots are what set your real performance. Then multiply by the R-value per inch for whatever is up there.

One safety note that overrides everything else on this page. If what you find is vermiculite — small grey-brown pebbles that look a bit like accordion-shaped gravel — stop. A large share of vermiculite sold in the US came from a mine with naturally occurring asbestos contamination. Do not disturb it, do not blow over it without advice, and have it tested first. Adding insulation on top of vermiculite is sometimes acceptable, but that is a decision for someone who has tested the material, not a DIY judgement call.

The Rule That Catches Almost Everyone: Faced vs. Unfaced

If there is any insulation already in your attic floor, the new layer must be unfaced — no kraft paper, no foil backing.

The reason is that a facing is a vapour retarder, and a vapour retarder belongs on the warm-in-winter side of the assembly and nowhere else. Put a second one on top and you have trapped a layer between two vapour retarders. Moisture that gets in has no way out, so it condenses inside the insulation, which both destroys the R-value and eventually rots the framing. This is the single most common expensive mistake in an attic top-up, and it is easy to make because faced batts are what most stores stock at eye level.

Faced batts are correct only when you are insulating a bare attic floor with nothing underneath, and even then the facing goes face-down against the ceiling drywall. If you cannot find unfaced batts in the size you want, the accepted workaround is to buy faced and slash the facing thoroughly with a utility knife so it no longer functions as a barrier. Laying faced batts upside down does not fix it.

You Do Not Have to Match What Is Already There

Blown fiberglass over cellulose, batts over blown, mineral wool over fiberglass — all fine. The layers add up in R-value regardless of type, and mixing materials is standard practice.

Two things do change with the choice. Blown insulation conforms around wiring, joists, and awkward corners far better than batts, so it delivers closer to its rated value in a real attic; batts leave gaps unless you cut them carefully. And loose-fill cellulose settles roughly 10 to 20 percent over the first few years, so it should be installed deeper than the finished target. The calculator adds that allowance when you choose cellulose.

If you do use batts as the top layer, run them perpendicular to the joists rather than between them. That covers the joists themselves, which are a thermal bridge conducting heat straight through your insulation line, and it avoids compressing the existing layer into the joist bays.

When the Insulation Goes Above the Joists

Hitting R-49 usually means 14 to 18 inches of loose-fill, and a 2x10 joist is only 9.25 inches deep. So yes, the insulation will bury your joists, and that is normal and correct — a layer that stops level with the joist tops leaves the wood itself as an uninsulated bridge across the whole ceiling.

What it does mean is that you can no longer see where to walk. Plan for that before you start:

Air-Seal Before You Insulate

Insulation slows heat conduction; it does very little about air moving through gaps. Attic bypasses — the gaps around plumbing stacks, wiring penetrations, the top plates of interior walls, and especially the access hatch — leak conditioned air straight into the attic and carry moisture with it.

Sealing those with canned foam and caulk takes an afternoon and costs very little, and doing it after you have blown 16 inches of loose-fill means digging back through your new insulation to find them. Do it first. The hatch itself deserves weatherstripping and a rigid foam panel on the attic side, because it is often the single largest bypass in the house.

How much insulation do I need to add over R-30 to get R-49?

R-19 more, which is about 7 to 8 inches of blown fiberglass, 5 to 6 inches of blown cellulose, or a layer of unfaced R-19 batts. Measure your existing depth before trusting the R-30 figure, though: insulation settles, and an attic that was installed at R-30 years ago is often nearer R-22 to R-25 today, which changes what you need to add.

Does insulation added over existing insulation have to be unfaced?

Yes. The kraft paper or foil facing is a vapour retarder, and an assembly should have only one, on the warm-in-winter side. A second facing on top traps moisture between two barriers where it condenses inside the insulation, ruining the R-value and eventually rotting the framing. Faced batts are correct only on a bare attic floor with the facing down against the drywall. If you can only find faced batts, slash the facing thoroughly so it no longer acts as a barrier.

Can I put blown insulation over fiberglass batts?

Yes, and it is often the better choice. You do not need to match the existing material, and loose-fill conforms around joists, wiring, and irregular corners far better than a second layer of batts would. The R-values simply add. The only requirement is that the existing layer is dry and free of mould or pest damage; if it is wet, find and fix the leak before covering it, since new insulation on top will hide the problem rather than solve it.

Should the insulation cover the joists?

Yes. Wood joists conduct heat much faster than insulation, so a layer that stops level with the joist tops leaves a thermal bridge running across the entire ceiling. Reaching R-49 normally means 14 to 18 inches of loose-fill, which buries a 9.25 inch 2x10 joist completely. Do I need to remove old attic insulation first?

Usually not. Dry, undamaged insulation can be left in place and covered, and removal is expensive and messy. Remove it if it is wet or mouldy, if there is rodent contamination, or if it is vermiculite that has tested positive for asbestos. Vermiculite deserves particular care: much of what was sold in the US came from a mine with asbestos contamination, so have it tested rather than disturbing it.
