How the Spacing Math Works

Even spacing is not a matter of picking a round number like 12 inches and marking it off. If you do that, the last gap absorbs whatever is left over and ends up visibly narrower or wider than the rest, which is the single most common way a board and batten wall looks slightly wrong without anyone being able to say why.

The wall width has to be the fixed input and the gap has to be the variable. Work in this order:

  1. Take your target gap and find how many battens roughly fit: (wall width + target gap) ÷ (batten width + target gap), rounded to a whole number.
  2. Subtract every batten from the wall: wall width − (batten count × batten width). That is the total open space.
  3. Divide the open space by the number of gaps, which is always batten count − 1. That is your real spacing.

Work in inches throughout. Feet-and-inches arithmetic is where most layout errors creep in, and every result above is given in inches for the same reason.

Nominal Size Is Not Actual Size

A 1x4 board is not four inches wide. Lumber is named for its rough-sawn dimension before drying and planing, so the piece you carry out of the store is half an inch narrower. This matters more here than in most projects, because the error multiplies by the number of battens.

MDF is the usual pick for painted work because it has no grain to telegraph through the paint and no knots to bleed. Primed pine costs more but survives a bathroom or a mudroom better, since MDF swells permanently if it takes on water at a cut edge.

How do you space board and batten evenly?

Decide roughly how wide you want the gaps, then let the wall set the exact figure. Divide the wall width plus your target gap by the batten width plus that same target gap, and round to a whole number of battens. Then recalculate the true gap as the wall width minus all the batten widths, divided by the number of spaces. That final figure is almost never the round number you started with, and forcing a round number is exactly what leaves an odd narrow strip at one end.

Should a batten go at each end of the wall?

Yes for almost every layout. Starting and ending with a batten frames the wall and makes the pattern read as intentional, and it keeps the math simple because the number of gaps is always one less than the number of battens. If the wall dies into a corner where another treatment continues, you may want to end with a gap instead.

What size boards are used for board and batten?

Interior faux board and batten is usually 1x3 or 1x4 MDF or pine, which measure 2.5 and 3.5 inches wide rather than the 3 and 4 inches the label implies. Some people use 1x2 at 1.5 inches for a narrower, more modern look. Always measure the stock rather than trusting the nominal size: half an inch of error per batten across nine battens throws the layout off by four and a half inches.

How tall should a board and batten wall be?

The most common heights are about one third of the wall for a classic wainscot look, which is 32 to 40 inches in a room with 8-foot ceilings, roughly two thirds for a high wainscot, or full height to the ceiling in entryways and stairwells. Stopping at exactly half the wall height tends to read as unresolved. Measure from the top of the baseboard rather than the floor if you are keeping the existing base.

Do battens need to line up with studs?

Not for thin MDF or pine battens on drywall. Construction adhesive plus 18-gauge brad nails holds them fine, and forcing battens onto 16-inch stud centers would override your spacing math entirely. The one thing worth checking before you cut is that no batten lands on an outlet or switch, since you would have to notch the batten or move the box.
