Garden Area Calculator
Calculate the area of one or more garden beds. Add multiple beds and get the total area for soil, mulch, or planting estimates.
Bed Shape
How to Calculate Garden Bed Area
For rectangular beds: multiply length by width. For circular beds: multiply π (3.14) by the radius squared. For triangular beds: multiply base by height and divide by 2.
Once you have the total area, you can use it to calculate how much soil, mulch, compost, or seed you need for your garden.
Raised Bed Sizing Guide
The ideal raised bed width is 3–4 feet — wide enough to plant multiple rows, narrow enough to reach the center without stepping in. Standard raised bed depths: 6 inches for shallow-rooted plants (lettuce, herbs, strawberries), 12 inches for most vegetables, 18–24 inches for deep-rooted crops like tomatoes, carrots, and parsnips.
A 4×8 foot raised bed (32 sq ft) can feed a family of 2–3 with mixed vegetables. Two 4×8 beds can sustain a family of 4. For a full kitchen garden, plan for 100–200 sq ft of growing space per person depending on variety and intensity.
Soil and Amendment Quantities
A 4×8 ft raised bed at 12" deep needs exactly 32 cubic feet (about 1.2 cubic yards) of growing medium. Standard fill mix for raised beds: 60% topsoil, 30% compost, 10% perlite or coarse sand for drainage. Bagged garden soil from Home Depot or Lowe's typically costs $5–$8 for a 1 cubic foot bag — filling a 4×8×12" bed requires about 32 bags. Bulk soil delivery is significantly cheaper for larger gardens.
