A kitchen backsplash is one of the most impactful cosmetic upgrades in a home - and one of the most manageable DIY tile projects. The area is small, tiles are at a comfortable working height, and mistakes are fixable before the adhesive cures. Most homeowners complete a standard kitchen backsplash in a weekend.
Step 1: Plan and Calculate Materials
Measure the backsplash area and use the Tile Calculator for tile count - add 15% waste for subway or diagonal patterns. For subway tile, 3x6 inch tiles cover roughly 1 square foot per 8 tiles including grout joints. Order from the same lot number.
Step 2: Prep the Wall Surface
Remove existing backsplash and repair damaged drywall. Standard drywall is acceptable away from the sink; cement board is better near the sink. Wipe with a degreaser - cooking grease prevents adhesive from bonding.
Step 3: Plan the Layout
Find the center of the primary focal area and work outward. Mark a level horizontal line where the first row of tiles will sit. Dry-lay a row on the counter to confirm layout before applying adhesive.
Step 4: Apply Adhesive
For walls, use mastic (premixed tile adhesive) for most ceramic and porcelain backsplash tile. Use thinset for glass tile or natural stone. Apply with a V-notch trowel in sections of 2-3 square feet - small sections prevent the adhesive from skinning over.
Step 5: Set the Tiles
Press tiles firmly into adhesive with a slight twisting motion. Use tile spacers for consistent joint width. For mosaic tiles on mesh backing, press the entire sheet at once. Clean adhesive off tile faces immediately.
Step 6: Cut Around Outlets
Turn off the circuit breaker before tiling around outlets. Use a wet saw for straight cuts. Extend outlet boxes with extension rings so they sit flush with the tile surface - required by code in most jurisdictions.
Step 7: Grout and Seal
Wait 24 hours before grouting. Use unsanded grout for joints 1/8 inch or narrower. Apply with a rubber grout float diagonally. Clean with a barely damp sponge. Seal cement-based grout after 72 hours - backsplash grout is exposed to cooking grease and needs sealing.
Pro Tips
- Use a level constantly - tile is unforgiving and a row that starts slightly off compounds visibly.
- Caulk the joint where backsplash meets the countertop instead of grouting.
- Extend electrical outlet boxes to sit flush with the tile surface.
- Buy 15% more tile than calculated for subway or diagonal layouts.
